Vaillant vs Ideal: Which Boiler Actually Lasts Longer?
Left alone in identical houses with identical water, a Vaillant ecoTEC will normally outlast an Ideal Logic, and the gap is mostly the heat exchanger and the way each one is built to be taken apart. But that is the smaller half of the answer. In London the thing that decides whether a boiler reaches fifteen years or dies at seven is almost never the badge on the front. It is the water it sits in, the pipework it was connected to, whether the system was flushed properly on the day, and whether anybody has opened it since. We replace far more good boilers killed by bad installations than bad boilers killed by age.
Which lasts longer, a Vaillant or an Ideal?
On like for like use, the Vaillant lasts longer. The main reason is the primary heat exchanger: Vaillant use stainless steel on the ecoTEC range, Ideal use an aluminium alloy casting on the Logic range. Stainless tolerates poor water chemistry and repeated acidic condensate better, and it is far more forgiving of a system that was never cleaned out properly before the boiler went on.
That is a real engineering difference and it is worth paying for. It is not, however, a ten year difference on its own. An Ideal Logic installed on a clean, inhibited system with a filter fitted and an annual service will comfortably see out a Vaillant that was hung on a sludged microbore system in a Victorian conversion and never touched again. We see both outcomes every month.
The second difference is serviceability, and it matters more the older the boiler gets. Vaillant design their casings, connections and cartridges to be worked on in situ, and parts come apart in the order you would hope. Ideal have improved on this, but at the budget end some jobs that ought to be a cartridge swap end up taking apart more of the boiler than the fault deserves. When a repair takes three hours instead of one, more people write the boiler off. That is how serviceability turns into lifespan.
That is a narrower question than which boiler is best, and it is a more useful one, because lifespan can be observed in the field while overall quality mostly cannot.

What actually kills a boiler in London

A modern heat exchanger has very fine waterways because that is how it extracts heat efficiently. Fine waterways block.
What happens next follows a script. The boiler starts kettling, a sound like a slow boiling kettle, because water is flashing to steam on a hot spot that can no longer shed heat into moving water. Flow temperature swings. The overheat protection starts cutting in, so the boiler locks out, and someone resets it. Circulation gets worse, the pump works harder, and eventually either the pump or the heat exchanger gives up. None of that is a brand problem. It happens to Vaillants and Ideals alike, and it is the single biggest thing any owner can prevent.
The second killer is the installation itself. Undersized gas pipe that starves the burner at full rate, a condensate run in thin pipe going out to a cold external wall, a flue set at the wrong fall, no filter, no proper flush, a boiler two sizes too big so it short cycles all winter. Every one of those shortens life regardless of the badge, and all of them were decided years before anybody noticed a problem.
The prior question is how long should a boiler last at all, because the honest range is wide and the badge moves it less than the water and the installation do.
If you are choosing between a better boiler on a cheaper installation and a cheaper boiler on a better installation, take the better installation. A magnetic filter, a proper power flush or fresh fill where the system warrants it, correctly sized gas pipe and a condensate route that will not freeze will do more for the life of the appliance than the badge will.
Where Vaillant earns its reputation
Vaillant earn it on the parts of the boiler that are expensive to replace and on the ones you cannot replace at all. The stainless heat exchanger is the headline. The hydraulic block and diverter arrangement is the quieter one: the wear items are cartridges that come out as a unit, so a common fault becomes a short repair rather than a stripdown.
The controls side is coherent too. The ecoTEC platform has stayed recognisable across generations, so an engineer who worked on one ten years ago can read a current one without guessing, and the diagnostic information narrows the fault rather than pointing at a whole assembly.
The honest cost of that is money. Vaillant boilers cost more to buy and their parts cost more, and on some repairs you will feel it. The premium is only worth paying if you intend to keep the house and maintain the thing. If you are selling in three years, it is not coming back to you.
Where Ideal is better than its reputation suggests
Ideal carry a reputation from older models that the current Logic range does not fully deserve. The modern units are simpler than their rivals, the parts are cheap and every merchant in London has them on the shelf, and simple boilers with available parts get repaired rather than replaced. That is a longevity argument, even if it is not the one the marketing makes.
They are also easy boilers to diagnose. The fault reporting is plain, the layout inside is uncluttered, and there is less to go wrong because there is less in there. For a rental flat or a small property, an Ideal fitted properly on a clean system is a sensible piece of engineering and not a compromise you should feel bad about.
The weakness is the one we started with. Aluminium is less tolerant of bad water and of acidic condensate sitting in the exchanger through a long summer off period, and once that casting is gone the repair rarely makes economic sense against the price of the boiler. So an Ideal punishes neglect faster. Look after it and it will do a long stint. Ignore it on a dirty system and it will let you know sooner than the Vaillant would.
The parts that decide how long each one lasts
Longevity is not one number, it is a sequence of component lives, and only one of them is fatal. Knowing which is which tells you whether a quote to repair is sensible or whether you are pouring money into an appliance that has already made up its mind.
The primary heat exchanger is the boiler. If that fails out of warranty you are usually replacing the appliance, because the part plus the labour approaches the cost of a new unit. Everything else below is a repair, not a funeral, and an engineer who says otherwise on a five year old boiler should be asked to show you the failed part.
- Primary heat exchanger: the one that ends the boiler. Killed by scale, sludge and poor circulation, not by time.

- Gas valve: rarely fails outright, more often needs setting up correctly with an analyser after other work.
- Sensors and thermistors: cheap, common, and the cause of a lot of faults blamed on the board.
Parts availability, and why it matters at year ten
A boiler dies when the repair stops being worth it, and availability is half of that sum. Both brands are well supported in London, which is not true of every make on the market, and that alone puts them ahead of several cheaper options.
Ideal parts are cheap and very widely stocked, so an out of hours repair is more likely to be finished the same day. Vaillant parts cost more but stay available across a long production life, and because the platform changes slowly an engineer is less likely to find the replacement no longer fits. Both matter, and they pull in different directions.
Where this bites is with makes that have been discontinued or rebadged. If you are weighing up a third option because it is cheaper, ask the installer plainly which merchant nearby holds the diverter cartridge and the board for it. A vague answer is your answer about year ten.

Does the installation matter more than the brand?
Yes, and not marginally. In our experience the installation and the water it runs in decide the majority of the outcome, and the brand decides the rest. A correctly sized boiler on a cleaned, inhibited, filtered system with a sound gas supply and a frost protected condensate run will give you a long life from either make.
Sizing is the one people get wrong most often and notice least. A combi is sized around hot water demand, not around the fantasy that a bigger number heats the house better. Fit a boiler far larger than the heat loss of the property and it spends the whole winter firing, satisfying, shutting down and firing again. Every one of those cycles is an ignition, a purge and a thermal shock, and the components that wear are wearing at several times the rate they should.
Then there is what happens on the day. Was the system flushed or just drained and refilled? Was inhibitor added and recorded? Is the filter somewhere you can actually reach? Was the gas pipe proven at full rate? Those answers are worth more than the brand comparison you came here for.

What servicing actually does for lifespan
A real service extends the life of either boiler, and a pointless one extends nothing. The difference is whether anybody opened the appliance. A visit where the engineer looked at the display, ran the hot tap and wrote a certificate has told you nothing about the condition of the components inside.
What should happen is that the case comes off, the combustion is checked with an analyser and the readings are recorded, the condensate trap is cleaned out, the heat exchanger and burner are inspected for debris and corrosion, the seals are checked, the filter is cleaned and the system water is assessed. On an older boiler the flue is checked for integrity along its run. If the paperwork you get back has no combustion figures on it, you did not have a service.
System water is the item that pays for the whole visit. A quick test tells the engineer whether the inhibitor is still working, and topping it up costs very little set against a heat exchanger. Done every year, that one check is the closest thing to buying a boiler more years.
So which should you buy?
If you are staying in the property, the water is hard, and you want the boiler to be a background appliance for as long as possible, buy the Vaillant and spend the extra on the installation as well. The stainless exchanger is the right insurance against London water and against the imperfect systems most London houses actually have.
If the property is a rental, a flat you will move on from, or a house where the heating system itself is due for replacement in a few years, buy the Ideal, insist on a proper clean and a filter, and put the money you saved into the pipework. It is a sound boiler that is easy and cheap to keep running, and that is a legitimate way to own heating.
One case changes the advice: a system that cannot be properly cleaned, such as old microbore being kept for now. Aluminium has the harder time there, so the stainless exchanger is worth the premium precisely because conditions are poor. The other is a household with high simultaneous hot water demand, where the question stops being brand and becomes whether a combi is the right appliance at all.
If the shortlist you are actually holding is Worcester Bosch vs Vaillant rather than Vaillant against Ideal, most of the reasoning above still applies, but the gap between the two candidates closes a long way and the decision moves onto heat exchanger design and parts supply.
When does repairing stop making sense?
Repair while the failures are peripheral, and stop when they reach the heat exchanger or when they start arriving in sequence. A diverter valve on a nine year old boiler is a repair. A primary heat exchanger on the same boiler is usually not, because you are spending most of the price of a new appliance to extend a component set that is all the same age.
The sequence matters as much as the part. One fault in eight years is a boiler having a bad day. Three unrelated faults in eighteen months is a boiler telling you the whole appliance has aged together, and the next one is already on its way. At that point the money is better spent on replacement with the system cleaned properly at the same time.
Be careful of the opposite error, which is commoner than people think. Plenty of boilers get condemned on a symptom that turns out to be a sensor, a blocked condensate trap or a fouled filter. Before anybody quotes for replacement, ask which component has failed, ask to see it, and ask what test proved it.
Any of those conversations should begin with a boiler diagnosis rather than with a replacement quote, because the two have opposite incentives built into them.
A boiler replacement decided by somebody who has not looked inside the appliance is a sales decision wearing an engineering coat.
Treat repeated lockouts as a fault to diagnose, not a habit to live with. The appliance is protecting itself from something, and resetting it over and over wears the parts that are still healthy.
