Which Boiler Brand Is Best? An Engineer's View From Inside the Casing

For most London homes the best boiler is a Vaillant ecoTEC Plus, with Worcester Bosch as the equally safe alternative and Viessmann as the better engineered option if you accept a narrower parts supply. That judgement has nothing to do with efficiency figures, which are within a rounding error of each other across every brand you would seriously consider. It comes from the only three things that decide whether a boiler is a good buy over fifteen years: what fails on it, how quickly the failed part can be in an engineer hand, and whether the appliance was designed to be worked on at all. Ideal and Baxi are competent and cheap to run parts through, which makes them the honest choice on a tight budget rather than a compromise you should feel bad about. The false economy sits below that tier, where the saving is real on day one and gone the first time a part has to be ordered in.

None of this comes from brochures, because the specifications are close to identical. Every condensing boiler sold new has a modulating gas valve, a pump, a diverter valve, sensors, ignition and flame sensing, a circuit board and a heat exchanger. What separates them is how those parts are made, how they are arranged, and what happens on the day one stops.

Judge a boiler on what fails, not on the brochure

Almost every boiler that ends a service call has failed in one of six places: the heat exchanger, the circuit board, the diverter valve that switches between radiators and taps, the pump, the fan, or the sensors and pressure switches. Knowing that list is more useful than any review, because the brands differ in how painful each of those six is rather than in whether they happen.

A diverter valve whose cartridge can be swapped in place is a fundamentally better product than one where the same job means draining down and stripping half the appliance. The failure is equally likely. The consequence is not. The second question is supply. A part stocked by three merchants within a few miles is a morning without heating. Vaillant: the default choice for most London homes

Vaillant ecoTEC Plus is what I would fit in most London properties, because it balances build quality against the practical reality of getting it repaired. The heat exchanger is stainless steel rather than aluminium, which matters on older systems, and the layout inside the casing is sensible, with the components you actually replace reachable from the front rather than buried behind things you have to remove first.

It is not faultless. The diverter valve assembly is the part that comes up most often on the older ecoTEC range, usually showing as heating that works while the hot water runs lukewarm. It is a well understood job, the cartridge is a stocked item, and it does not mean dismantling the boiler around it. Worcester Bosch: the one everybody can support

Worcester Bosch Greenstar is the safest choice in the country on availability, and that is a real advantage rather than a consolation prize. Almost every gas engineer in London has worked on one and almost every merchant counter holds the common parts. If you sell the house or run several rentals, that consistency is worth money.

The trade off is the heat exchanger. Worcester have long used an aluminium silicon alloy rather than stainless steel. Aluminium moves heat extremely well and is cheaper to cast into a complex shape, which is part of why these boilers are good value, but it is more sensitive to the chemistry of the water in the heating circuit. On a cleaned system with a magnetic filter and correct inhibitor it runs for years. On a Victorian system full of black sludge with neither, it is the part that eventually blocks and gets condemned. My position: if the system will be cleaned properly, Worcester and Vaillant are a tie and you buy on who is fitting it. If the system is old and dirty, the stainless exchanger is the more forgiving bet.

Viessmann: the best engineered, with one caveat

Viessmann Vitodens is the best built appliance in the mainstream market, and most engineers who have had the case off one will say so. The stainless heat exchanger is a coiled design genuinely different from the cast blocks everyone else uses, the internal build is a step up, and the controls are better thought through. If you intend to stay in the property, this is the one least likely to need you at all.

The caveat keeps it off the top of my list for a typical London flat. The parts network is narrower, more of the componentry is brand specific, and fewer engineers fit them. That is fine when your usual engineer is a Viessmann installer. It is less fine at nine at night in February when whoever is available has never had the front off one. Quality of appliance and speed of repair are different questions, and for a rental or a busy family home I weight repair speed heavily. The same applies with more force to smaller specialists such as ATAG: buy them because you have an installer who fits them, not because a forum praised the heat exchanger.

Intergas: the fewest parts capable of failing

Intergas deserves a mention its market share does not reflect. The combi range uses a single heat exchanger for both heating and hot water, which removes the diverter valve entirely. Since diverter valve failure is one of the most common repairs across the whole market, deleting it is a genuine engineering achievement rather than a marketing line.

It matters in hard water terms too, because there is no separate plate exchanger on the hot water side to fur up, and that is the failure mode that quietly ruins combis in London. The caveat is the same as Viessmann: coverage is thinner, so ask whether whoever you would call in an emergency has worked on one.

Ideal, Baxi and the budget end: what you are actually buying

Ideal Logic and the Baxi group boilers are competent and the right answer in plenty of situations, particularly a rental where the sums have to work. Parts are cheap, widely stocked and quick, which is what actually decides how painful a breakdown is. An Ideal with a common part that arrives in an hour is a better ownership experience than a premium boiler with a part on back order.

What you give up is margin. These are built to a price, which shows in component quality and in how much is packed into a small casing. What London hard water does to a boiler, and which cope best

London water is drawn largely from chalk ground, so it carries dissolved calcium that comes out as limescale the moment it is heated hard. In a combi the hottest domestic water surface is the plate heat exchanger, a compact stack of stainless plates passing heat from the boiler circuit into your taps. That is where scale builds, fastest in homes taking short frequent draws, because every draw fires the boiler hard against a small volume of water.

The symptoms arrive gradually. Hot water flow drops, the temperature swings in the shower, the boiler cycles noisily on hot water demand, and eventually the shower runs cold while the radiators stay perfect. People assume the boiler is dying. Which brands cope best? Those where that exchanger is a stocked replaceable item, and those without a separate hot water plate at all. Ask for the incoming flow rate and pressure to be measured before any combi is specified. A combi that cannot be fed enough cold water will disappoint you whatever name is on it.

Combi, system or heat only matters more than the brand

Choosing the type is a bigger decision than choosing the make, and it gets rushed constantly. A combi heats on demand and needs no cylinder, which suits a one or two bathroom flat, but it is limited by mains flow and will not run two decent showers at once whatever output is on the box. A system boiler with a stored cylinder will run several outlets together, which is why a family house is usually worse off after a conversion to a combi sold on price.

The honest version is four questions: how many bathrooms, how many people shower in the same half hour, what the mains flow rate is, and whether there is space for a cylinder. Answer those and the type is decided for you. Then pick the brand. Doing it the other way round is how people end up with a well reviewed appliance that cannot do the job, then blame the manufacturer. Flats, conversions and new builds change the answer

London housing stock forces the choice more than generic brand rankings allow. In a Victorian conversion the pipework is often buried in walls and floors, sometimes microbore, carrying decades of debris. That system is the constraint, not the appliance, and fitting anything onto it without a proper clean and a magnetic filter is choosing your own failure mode. Purpose built blocks are different again. The installation decides more than the brand does

The fastest way to ruin any boiler on this page is a poor installation, and it is more common than brand failure. The gas supply pipe must be sized for the appliance rather than reused because it was already there. The system needs flushing and dosing, with a magnetic filter fitted and then actually cleaned at each service. The condensate must fall properly and run internally wherever possible, because an external condensate pipe in a cold snap is the most common reason a healthy boiler stops in January. The flue must terminate where the manufacturer says, not where it was convenient.

What I would fit and why

How long should a boiler last is the one that reframes the entire decision, because a unit replaced at year eight and a unit replaced at year eighteen are not the same purchase whatever each cost on the day it went in. A well chosen boiler on a clean system, serviced annually and fed treated water, should give well over a decade of useful life. What shortens it is an unflushed system with no magnetic filter, repeated topping up with fresh hard water, short cycling caused by oversizing, and skipped services that let a small fault grind away at something expensive.
Is an aluminium heat exchanger a problem
It is a design trade off rather than a defect. Aluminium alloy exchangers transfer heat very well and keep the appliance affordable, but they are more sensitive to the chemistry of the water in the heating circuit.
