Baxi vs Worcester Bosch: Which One Would We Fit?
For most London homes we would fit the Worcester Bosch, and the reason is boring rather than glamorous: the parts are on a merchant shelf within a few miles of wherever you live, the layout behind the front panel is easy to work on, and a broken one tends to be back in service the same day. Baxi builds a perfectly sound boiler, and on a flat that needs a compact unit in a tight cupboard, or where the budget genuinely will not stretch, we will fit one without wincing. The gap between the two brands as machines is much smaller than the gap between a good installation and a bad one, which is the uncomfortable part nobody selling boilers wants to say out loud.
Baxi or Worcester Bosch: the short answer
Worcester Bosch, for most homes, on serviceability and parts supply rather than on anything a brochure claims. Baxi is the reasonable choice when space is tight, when the budget is the deciding factor, or when the existing boiler is already a Baxi or a Potterton and the pipework and flue route suit a like for like swap.
Neither brand fails in a way that should frighten you. Both are condensing boilers built around the same handful of components: a fan, a premix burner, a cast heat exchanger, a modulating gas valve, an ignition and sensing electrode, a pump, a diverter valve on the combis, a plate heat exchanger for the hot water, and a controller board reading a couple of thermistors. When one of them dies at seven on a winter morning, the question is not which badge is on the case. The question is whether the part is in a van or a merchant counter by lunchtime, and whether the engineer can get at it without dismantling half the boiler.
That is where we separate them. Worcester wins on availability and access. Baxi wins on physical size and on price at the point of purchase, and on sites where those two things decide the job, it is the right call.
It is worth saying plainly that neither of them belongs on a list of boiler brands to avoid. The brands that cause us real trouble are the ones where a control board is proprietary, where a plate exchanger is bonded into an assembly rather than bolted to it, or where the manufacturer has stopped supplying a range that is still on walls. Baxi and Worcester both fail the ordinary way, with parts that exist and repairs that finish the same day.
What actually fails on a Worcester Bosch
Three things, mostly, and all three are repairs rather than write offs: the diverter valve cartridge stops moving, the secondary plate heat exchanger scales up, and the condensate trap blocks or the siphon loses its prime.
The diverter is the part that decides whether heated water goes to the radiators or to the plate heat exchanger for your taps. On the Greenstar combis it lives in a plastic hydraulic housing and the moving part is a cartridge with a rubber seal and a small electric actuator on top. When it sticks, the symptoms are specific and easy to recognise: hot water that is only warm because it is being diluted by flow going the wrong way, or radiators that heat up whenever somebody runs a tap. The cartridge is a genuinely quick change, which is the whole point, because most brands make you take that repair a lot further.
The plate heat exchanger is a stack of thin stainless plates with narrow channels, and in a hard water area those channels fur up. Hot water goes lukewarm, then fluctuates, then gets worse as soon as you open a second tap. That is not a Worcester fault, it is physics happening to every combi in London, but it is the single most common reason we get called to one.
The condensate arrangement is where Worcester has annoyed engineers for years. The trap and siphon assembly holds a water seal, and when it silts up with the grey sludge that comes off a condensing heat exchanger, or when an external run of condensate pipe freezes, the boiler locks out on what looks like a flue or a pressure problem. Cleaning it out is straightforward, but the siphon has to be refilled properly afterwards or the boiler will simply do it again in a fortnight.
What we do not see often is a Worcester main heat exchanger failing before the rest of the boiler is ready to be retired. That is the part that matters, because the heat exchanger is the one component whose replacement cost makes you think about a new boiler instead.

What actually fails on a Baxi
The same list, broadly, because the architecture is the same. What differs is how quickly a repair turns into a bigger job, and how much of the boiler has to come apart to reach the part that failed.
Baxi combis use a diverter cartridge and a plate heat exchanger in the same way, and both scale and stick for the same reasons. Where we find Baxi harder work is depth of access. The compact models exist because somebody needed a boiler to fit a kitchen cupboard, and everything inside is packed to make that dimension. Getting a pump head or a plate exchanger out of one in a fitted cupboard with a worktop above it is a slower job than the same repair on a comparable Worcester, and slower jobs cost more whoever is doing them.
The other honest point is electronics. Across the older Baxi and Potterton range we have changed more controller boards and more display units than the equivalent Worcester population would suggest we should. It is not a safety issue and it is not a scandal, it is a parts count observation from vans that carry both. On the newer range the picture looks better, and we would not hold ten year old boards against a boiler being fitted today.
On the positive side, Baxi sits in the same group as Potterton and Main, so components travel across the range and the older stock stays supportable for a long time. If you already own a Potterton that a plumber told you is unrepairable, get a second opinion before you accept that, because the parts frequently still exist.
Parts availability is what decides how long you are cold
On a weekday in London, a Worcester part is almost always obtainable the same day from a plumbers merchant, and the common wear items are carried on vans as standard. Baxi is close behind on the current range and noticeably slower on anything discontinued.
This is the argument that does the most work in the real world and the one nobody considers when they are choosing a boiler. Reliability is not how rarely something breaks. Reliability, from the point of view of the person taking a cold shower, is how many hours pass between the fault and the fix. A boiler that fails twice in ten years and is repaired within the day is a better boiler to live with than one that fails once and waits four days for a part to come from a national distributor.
Both brands have proper technical support lines and both publish parts lists that a competent engineer can work from. Where Worcester is genuinely ahead is the sheer density of stock in the supply chain. Walk into almost any merchant in the city and the common Greenstar wear parts are behind the counter. That is not brand loyalty talking, it is what shortens a job from two visits to one.
Ask any installer quoting you for a new boiler which parts for that model they carry on the van. The answer tells you more about how a future breakdown will go than any spec sheet comparison will.
Which is easier to service in a London flat
Worcester, if there is room for it. Baxi, if there is not, and that trade is worth thinking about before the installer chooses for you.
A service is only as good as the access. The job involves dropping the front case, opening the sealed combustion chamber, inspecting and cleaning the burner and the heat exchanger fins, checking the electrode gap and condition, clearing the condensate trap, and running a combustion analysis at both high and low rate. Every one of those steps is affected by how the boiler was fitted and how much clearance it has.
In a Victorian conversion where the boiler has been squeezed into a cupboard on a landing, or in a purpose built block where it sits above a washing machine in a utility recess, the difference between a boiler you can work on from the front and a boiler that needs lifting off the wall is the difference between an hour and half a day. Worcester generally gives you more room to work and a more logical layout behind the panel. Baxi compact units give you a boiler that physically fits where nothing else will, which is sometimes the only consideration that matters.
The practical advice: whichever brand goes in, insist on the manufacturer clearances being respected rather than squeezed, and insist that isolation valves are fitted so the boiler can be worked on without draining the system. Those two decisions affect every repair for the next decade and they cost almost nothing on the day of installation.
Hard water changes the comparison more than the badge does
London water is hard across most of the supply area, and hard water attacks the same component on both brands: the plate heat exchanger inside the combi. Scale builds on the hottest surface it touches, and in a combi the hottest surface is the one your tap water passes over.
The symptom is always the same and always misread. Hot water starts fine and fades, or the shower runs hot then cool then hot again, or the boiler fires and cycles off repeatedly while the tap is open. People call it a boiler on its last legs. It is usually a scaled plate exchanger and a flushable or replaceable part rather than a dead boiler.
Neither Baxi nor Worcester has solved this. What you can do is fit scale protection on the cold main feeding the boiler, keep the hot water setting sensible rather than as high as it will go, and have the boiler serviced annually by somebody who actually opens it rather than glancing at the display and printing a certificate. If your installer does not mention water treatment when quoting for a combi in London, that tells you something about the quote.
If your home runs a hot water cylinder rather than a combi, the same chemistry applies to the coil and the immersion element instead, and what hard water does to a cylinder over its life is worth understanding before you choose a heating system at all.
Does the answer change for a system boiler?
Less than you would think. Take the plate heat exchanger and the diverter valve out of the equation, which is what a system boiler does, and you remove the two most common combi faults from both brands at once.
A system boiler heats a cylinder and the radiators, and has no involvement in producing hot water at the tap. That leaves the fan, the burner, the gas valve, the electrodes, the pump, the sensors and the board. Both brands do that job well, and the difference narrows further. Our preference stays with Worcester on parts and access, but the case is weaker and we would not argue hard with an installer who prefers Baxi on a system job.
What matters far more on a system installation is what sits around the boiler: a properly sized cylinder, a magnetic filter on the return, a system flush before the new boiler goes on, and controls that actually let the cylinder and the radiators run at sensible separate temperatures. A cheap boiler on a well built system outlives an expensive boiler bolted onto a sludged one. That is not a slogan, it is what we find when we open them.

Do not choose on warranty length
A long warranty is a sales instrument first and a reliability signal second, and it is usually conditional on annual servicing being carried out and documented. Miss a service and the cover can lapse exactly when you need it.
Both manufacturers offer extended cover, and both tie the longest terms to installation by an accredited installer and to a maintained service record. Read what the cover actually includes before you let it swing the decision. Labour and parts are not always treated the same, the response arrangement is not the same as an emergency call out, and scale damage and system debris damage are commonly excluded, which matters a great deal in London.
Our position: choose the boiler on how it fails, how it is repaired and how fast the parts arrive, then treat the warranty as a bonus that you protect by servicing it properly. Keep every service record in one folder with the commissioning sheet from the installation, because the first thing any warranty claim asks for is proof the boiler was looked after.

A one bedroom flat with a boiler wedged into a cupboard that will not take anything larger: a Baxi compact, fitted properly, with a filter and scale protection. A conversion with buried pipework and an old gravity system: the boiler is the least of it, and the pipework survey comes first.
The thing to take away is that brand choice is maybe the fourth most important decision in a boiler installation. Correct sizing comes first, because an oversized boiler cycles itself to death. System cleanliness comes second. Sensible controls and access come third. If somebody is selling you on the badge and skipping those, the badge will not save the installation.
